Today is the 70th birthday of renowned poet and journalist Hasan Hafiz.

Hasan Hafiz, also the president of the Jatiya Press Club, now serves as the editor of the Bangla daily Kaler Kantho, with 49 years of experience in journalism.

On 15 October 1955, he was born at Elahinagar village in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj district.

In the 1970s, Hasan Hafiz began his career in the Dainik Bangla as a Dhaka University correspondent. He also worked in Kolkata-based Shaptahik Desh, The Daily Janakantha, Boishakhi Television, the Daily Amar Desh, Anannya, H TV, the Amader Notun Shomoy, and the Khaborer Kagoj.

The poet has authored and edited more than 200 books, including 57 poetry books. His poems were translated into English, Spanish, French, Japanese, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, and Chakma.

In recognition of his contribution to literature and journalism, he was honoured with many awards, including the Sreegyan Atish Dipankar Gold Medal, the DUCSU Literary Award, the Agrani Bank-Shishu Academy Shishu Sahitya Puraskar, Souharda Kabita Utsab Sammanana of Kolkata, the Jatiya Press Club Lekhok Sammanana, Tonatuni Padak, the Dhaka Reporters Unity Literary Award, and Kabi Jibanananda Das Sammanana.

Hasan Hafiz is the general secretary of the UN-recognised organisation, Forum of Environmental Journalists of Bangladesh (FEJB).
