Prof Yunus allowed to appeal in embezzlement case

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (October 21) granted the interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus permission to file a leave-to-appeal against a High Court ruling that upheld his indictment in an embezzlement case.

A four-member Appellate Division bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed issued the order and scheduled the hearing for November 19.

Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun represented Prof. Yunus, while Attorney General Md Asduzzaman appeared for the state.

ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar filed the case on May 30 last year as the main plaintiff. According to the investigation report, the accused embezzled Tk 25 crore 22 lakh.

On June 12, Dr. Judge Syed Arafat Hossain of the Special Judge Court-4 of Dhaka formed the complaint in the name of 14 people including Yunus.

Seven people including Dr Yunus applied to the High Court seeking cancellation of the proceedings regarding the validity of the complaint. The hearing on this application ended on July 11. Later, on July 24, the High Court bench of Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Ibadat Hossain dismissed the petition.

The six other accused in the case are Grameen Telecom's Managing Director Nazmul Islam and directors Ashraful Hassan, Naznin Sultana, Md Shahjahan, Nurjahan Begum, and SM Huzzatul Islam Latifee.
