Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir on Tuesday said that the interim government supported the Law Adviser Asif Nazrul's opinion that President Mohammed Shahabuddin made a "lie" regarding the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation letter.

“The government agrees with what Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul said earlier (regarding the President)…there has been no decision as of now regarding removal of the President,” he told a press briefing at Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka in the evening.

Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder and Assistant Press Secretaries Nayem Ali and Shuchismita Tithi were present during the briefing.

Shahabuddin made some remarks about Hasina's resignation in an interview with Manab Zamin Chief Editor Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, which was published in the daily's political magazine "Janatar Chokh" on Sunday.

The article quoted the President as saying that there is no documentary evidence of Hasina's resignation.

While Dr Asif Nazrul yesterday (Monday) said that President Mohammed Shahabuddin has made self-contradictory statement as saying, "he does not have the resignation letter of Sheikh Hasina".
 
“The President himself in his address to the nation in presence of chiefs of the three forces at 11.20 pm on August 5 said ‘The former prime minister has submitted his resignation letter to him and he accepted it’. So by saying he doesn’t have the resignation letter of the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the President has made a self-contradictory statement,” the law adviser said while talking to newsmen at his ministry.

“The President wanted to know the Supreme Court’s opinion or reference, applying advisory jurisdiction as per Article 106 of the Constitution, to determine what to do in such a situation that arose on August 5. After that the Chief Justice along with all judges of the Appellate Division gave an opinion, the first line of that opinion was, ‘As the Prime Minister has resigned due to the current emerging situation in the country…’,” he added.

The Law Adviser said that the reference has signatures of all judges of the Appellate Division including then Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan in it.

Students today staged demonstrations in front of Bangabhaban and city’s Shahbagh intersection demanding resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
