Student leaders, who led the ouster of the Awami League regime on 5 August, on Wednesday declared they would throw out the country’s constitution, written in 1972, and draft a new one.
Those who were in favour of the July-August mass uprising cannot support the 1972 constitution written by mostly Awami League politicians shortly after the Liberation War, said Hasnat Abdullah, a key convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Many political analysts view the 1972 constitution as supportive of fascist rule.
Hasnat made the announcement at a rally jointly organised by Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Jatiyo Nagorik Committee at Shaheed Minar, University of Dhaka in the capital.
