Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed recommended Justice Zubair Rahman Chowdhury, a senior judge of the Appellate Division, as the head of the search committee for forming the Election Commission (EC).
Besides, Senior Justice AKM Asaduzzaman of the High Court has been nominated as a member of the committee.
Following the nomination of these two Supreme Court judges, the Supreme Court administration has sent their names to the Cabinet Division.
According to Section 3 of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022, the President will form a search committee comprising six members. This committee will recommend qualified candidates for the vacant positions of CEC and other election commissioners. The committee will include one judge from the Appellate Division nominated by the Chief Justice, who will also serve as the chairperson, one judge from the High Court Division nominated by the Chief Justice, the Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh, the Chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission, and two eminent citizens nominated by the President, one of whom must be a woman.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Law Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul announced that a search committee has been formed to establish the Election Commission, and a gazette notification in this regard would be published within a day.
