The renovation of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) building, established to conduct trials for genocide and crimes against humanity linked to the July-August student-led mass uprising, is nearly completed.
"The renovation work is almost done, and the building is being prepared to meet international standards for holding trials. Previously, the structure was in poor condition," Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam said today (Nov 2).
He also said the refurbished tribunal would be an impressive facility once completed.
A visit to the site revealed that the renovation is progressing rapidly, with workers actively repairing the historic white tribunal building, formerly known as the old High Court Bhaban.
Advisers Dr. Asif Nazrul (Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs) and Adilur Rahman Khan (Housing and Public Works) have inspected the renovation work twice to monitor progress.
Currently, ICT proceedings are being conducted in an adjacent temporary court while the renovation continues. The ICT was restructured on October 14, with High Court Judge Md. Golam Mortuza Mozumder appointed as chairman, alongside Justice Md. Shofiul Alam Mahmood and retired District and Sessions Judge Md. Mohitul Haq Anam Chowdhury as tribunal members.
The government had earlier reassembled the ICT prosecution team, including appointing the chief prosecutor and investigators.
The tribunal commenced proceedings by issuing arrest warrants for 46 individuals, including the ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, on October 17. Hasina had left the country on August 5 amid mass protests that ended her party’s 16-year rule.
