Garment workers in Gazipur lifted their blockade after 54-hour continuous protest on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway on Monday (Nov 11) after authorities promised to pay their due wages by next Sunday.
The workers started their protest on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
Earlier, the workers from TNZ Group’s factory in Gazipur’s Malek's Bari area were demanding several months of unpaid wages. Following which workers blocked the highway, causing severe traffic congestion and significant disruptions.
According to police, traffic was resumed around 2:45pm today after the workers agreed to withdraw their protest following assurances of wage payment by next week.
Superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police-2, Sarwar Alam, confirmed the matter.
The Assistant Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (Traffic North), Bimal Chandra Bormon, said that traffic movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway resumed after nearly 54 hours, though it will take some time to clear the lingering traffic backlog.
