New CEC hopeful to conduct free, fair polls

Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has hoped that he will be able to hold a free, fair, and acceptable general election facing all challenges.

In an immediate reaction to the media after being appointed as the CEC on Thursday, he said: “Our history of elections was tarnished as people could not vote in 2014, 2018, and 2024 parliamentary polls. For those, people were killed and became victims of enforced disappearance.”

“To realise the right to vote, thousands of people got injured while many others were killed during the July-August mass uprising. Under the circumstances, if we cannot hold free, fair, and acceptable elections, it will be an act of betrayal against the people’s sacrifices.”

Nasir Uddin said, “I had served different ministries diligently in the rank of a secretary. As the CEC, I will try my best to accomplish my duty…I have to deal with many challenges. Inshallah, I can conduct a free, fair, and acceptable election.”

Earlier in the day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed Nasir Uddin and other election commissioners a day after the Election Commission (EC) search committee submitted a shortlist of candidates.

Other members of the EC are former additional secretary Md Anwarul Islam Sarker, former district and sessions judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, former joint secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmad, and Brig Gen (retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah.

Two separate notifications were issued in this regard today.
