09 AL, 11 BNP candidates win

DHAKA: Some four Awami League-backed and four BNP-backed candidates won in the first phase upazila elections after a daylong peaceful voting in 40 districts on Wednesday.

Manikganj: At Daulatpur upazila, BNP-backed candidate Tojammel Haque Toja got 45,146 votes while his nearest candidate Nurul Islam Raja got 29,874 votes.

At Shivalaya upazila, BNP-backed candidate Ali Akbar got 41,049 votes while his nearest candidate AL-backed Abdur Rahim got 33,756 votes.

At Saturia upazila, BNP candidate Basir Uddin Thandu got 33,585 votes and his nearest candidate Abdul Majid got 31,267 votes.

Dinajpur: In Khansama upazila, BNP candidate Shah Shahiduzzaman bagged 37,204 votes while his nearest candidate Mahfuzar Rahman got 26,721 votes.

At Kaharol upazila of the district, BNP-candidate Mamunur Rashid Chowdhury bagged 30,458 votes while AL-backed candidate Gopes Chandra got 24,472 votes.

Kishoreganj: At Nikli upazila, AL candidate Karar Saiful Islam bagged 19,838 votes while his nearest BNP-backed candidate got 14,538 votes in all 32 polling centres.

Besides, AL backed candidate Sarwar Alam won at Bajitpur bagged 51,460 while his nearest candidate got 42,394.

Kushtia: At Kushtia Sadar BNP-backed Zakir Hossain won and bagged 106,295 votes while his nearest candidate of AL Aminul Haque got 63,300 votes.

On the other hand, BNP-backed candidate Tauhidul Islam Alam won at Bheramara upazila and bagged 38,294 while his nearest candidate AL-backed candidate Abu Bakar got 25,426.

Shariatpur: At Zazeera upazila, AL-backed candidate Mobarak Ali bagged 43,605 votes and his nearest candidate Nurul Islam Azad got 922 votes.

At Bhedarganj upazila, BNP candidate Anwar Hossain Majhi got 42,415 votes while his nearest candidate Altaf Hossain got 35,334 votes.

Bogra: At Dupchanchia upazila, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Andul Gani Mandal got 58,608 votes while his nearest candidate Sri Kalyan Prasad Poddar got 26,348 votes.

Hobiganj: At Bahubal upazila, AL candidate Abdul Hye got 28,671 votes while his nearest candidate Akaddach Mia Bablu got 17,803 votes.

Jessore: At Abhaynagar Upazila, BNP candidate Nurul Haque Molla got 67,283 votes while his nearest candidate Robin Adhikary Becha got 41,889 votes.

Jhenaidah: At Shailkupa upazila, AL candidate Shikder Mosharraf Hossain Sona got 1,29,367 votes while his nearest candidate Rakibul Hasan Dipu Bablu got 23,191 votes.

Khagrachhari: At Ramgar upazila, BNP-candidate Shahidul Islam Bhuiyan got 10,454 votes and his nearest candidate Chaithowai Chowdhury got 5,126 votes.

Magura: At Sripur upazila, Badrul Alam Hiro bagged 37,373 votes and his nearest candidate Humayun Rashid Muhith bagged 33,011 votes.

Rangpur: At Taraganj upazila, independent candidate Anisur Rahman Liton got 25,906 votes and his nearest candidate Shamsul Quader Sarker got 16,876 votes.

Narshingdi: At Belab upazila, BNP candidate Ahsan Habib Biplob got 38,083 votes while his nearest candidate Shamser Zaman got 26,726 votes.

Whereas, at Palash upazila, AL candidate Syed Javed got 32,741 votes while BNP-backed candidate Abu Bakar Siddique got 31,686 votes.

Bhola: At Lalmohan upazila, AL candidate Gias uddin Ahmed got 75,933 votes while his nearest candidate Aktaruzzaman got 6,200 votes.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed expressed satisfaction over the polls terming it peaceful.

The first phase of 6-phased upazila polls ended Wednesday. Next phases voting will be held on February 27, March 15, 23, 31 and May 3.
