Anti-discrimination Student Movement rejects President’s invitation

Anti-discrimination Student Movement today (December 16) declined an invitation from President Mohammad Shahabuddin to attend the Victory Day celebration at Bangabhaban.

In a statement issued by Zahid Ahsan, a member of the organization’s office cell confirmed the matter on Monday.

According to the statement, “On this national day of pride, we find it inconsistent with our commitment to the spirit of a mass uprising to celebrate Victory Day under the patronage of a President linked to a fascist regime.”

Following an executive committee decision, the organization announced that none of its leaders or members would attend the event at Bangabhaban, the release added.

Highlighting their stance, the movement’s convener, Hasnat Abdullah, said during a discussion, “Since August 5, we no longer acknowledge the legitimacy of this presidency. Accepting this invitation would be a betrayal of our principles.”

Spokesperson Umama Fatema said, “We have already called for the resignation of President Shahabuddin Chuppu. Participating in such a program undermines the intent of a mass uprising.”
