Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today expressed his deep sorrow over the death of Nobel Laureate and former US President Jimmy Carter, calling him a true friend of Bangladesh.

In a message of condolence sent to US President Joseph R. Biden, Professor Yunus said, "With great sadness, I extend my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Nobel Laureate President Jimmy Carter, a remarkable leader, a defender of human rights, and a dedicated advocate for peace and democracy worldwide."

Professor Yunus noted that during President Carter’s tenure and afterward, the relationship between Bangladesh and the United States grew stronger and more diverse.

He highlighted Carter's work in Bangladesh through the Carter Center, particularly in empowering women, promoting good governance, and advancing democracy, as a testament to his care and affection for the people of the country.

"We fondly remember his visit to Bangladesh in 1986, which was a great source of inspiration for our people," said the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner.

He added that President Carter was not only an influential figure in the United States and global politics but also a valued personal friend.

"I had the privilege of meeting him many times at Nobel Laureate gatherings over the years. His strong commitment to human rights and social justice was always a source of encouragement for me," Yunus shared.

The chief adviser recalled Carter’s humility, wisdom, and unwavering belief in the power of people to bring change, saying that his legacy will inspire future generations.

"On behalf of the Government and the people of Bangladesh, I offer our deepest sympathies to the people of the United States and especially to President Carter’s family. We pray for the eternal peace of his departed soul," he concluded.
