The Supreme Court (SC) today (Jan 5) upheld a High Court (HC) decision scrapping four cases filed against BNP's acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
A four-member bench, headed by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, rejected the state’s leave-to-appeal petitions against the HC order.
Barrister Anik R Haq, representing the state, confirmed the matter.
In 2007, during the army-backed caretaker government, multiple extortion cases were filed against Tarique Rahman at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh, and Dhanmondi police stations. The legality of these cases was challenged in the HC under Section 56 (Ka) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
On October 23, a dual HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain dismissed the cases. Subsequently, the state filed leave-to-appeal petitions with the SC.
Following the scheduled hearing on Sunday, the SC delivered its order, upholding the HC order.
