Voting ends amid violence, counting on

DHAKA: The counting of the voting of 94 upazila parishads began after it ended amid some stray incidents in the second phase elections.

The voting started at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm on Thursday without any break.  

Meanwhile, election commission has postponed the voting at 21 poling centres in different upazilas across the country due to violence and election manipulations.

A BNP activist was killed in a clash with Awami League at Nandipara polling centre over establishing supremacy under Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali district.         

The government announced public holiday in the upazilas where elections were taking place.

The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled elections in 117 upazilas in the second phase.

Law enforcing agencies, including army and BGB, were deployed in the polling areas to ensure tight security and hold free and fair elections.

Over 1.94 crore voters at 114 upazilas in 52 districts are exercising their voting rights during the second phase of the upazila elections.

A total of 500 aspirants are contesting for chairmen, 506 for vice chairmen, and 334 for vice chairwomen in 115 upazilas.
