Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, ranked as the world's most polluted city today, with its air quality reaching an alarming level.
According to the Swiss-based air quality monitoring organization IQAir, Dhaka recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 243 at 8:45 AM on Monday (February 3), categorizing it as 'very unhealthy.'
Some areas within the city experienced even worse air conditions. The AQI in Goran was recorded at 390, while Mirpur Eastern Housing reached 326, both falling into the 'hazardous' category, posing severe health risks to residents.
IQAir regularly ranks cities based on air pollution levels. An AQI score between 101 and 200 is considered 'unhealthy' for sensitive groups, while readings between 201 and 300 fall under the 'very unhealthy' category. Scores exceeding 301 are labeled 'hazardous,' indicating extreme health risks and potential long-term consequences for public health.
Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution, which worsens significantly during the winter months due to increased dust, emissions, and stagnant air conditions. Air quality generally sees some improvement during the monsoon season.
Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such high pollution levels can lead to severe respiratory diseases and other health complications, urging authorities to take immediate measures to address the crisis.
