Enam Ahmed Chowdhury passes away

Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, the former Chairman of the Privatisation Commission, has passed away at the age of 87. He died on Monday at around 5:00 pm following a heart attack at his residence in Dhaka’s Banani.

Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, doctors declared him dead upon arrival, according to his son, Nadim Ahmed Chowdhury.

His funeral prayers and burial will take place on Wednesday, after the arrival of his daughter and other family members from abroad.

A distinguished bureaucrat, Chowdhury began his career in the Pakistan Civil Service before serving in key international roles, including Secretary of the United Nations ESCAP Commission in Bangkok and Vice President of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). He also served as Economic Minister in London and held significant positions with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Though he retired in the late 1990s, Chowdhury remained active in politics, joining the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1999 and later serving as Chairman of the Privatisation Commission under the BNP-Jamaat coalition government in 2001. He later joined the Awami League in December 2018.

Born in Barokot village, Golapganj, Sylhet on June 29, 1937, Chowdhury made lasting contributions to Bangladesh’s political and economic landscape.
