Shibli Rubayat-Ul Islam, the former chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), was arrested in Dhaka on Tuesday night.
A team from the Detective Branch of police apprehended him at his Dhanmondi residence around 9:00 PM.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallik confirmed the matter.
The arrest follows allegations of embezzling crores of Tk, with accusations suggesting his involvement with deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her adviser Salman F Rahman.
Shibli, a Dhaka University teacher, served as BSEC chairman from 2020 until his resignation in August 2024 following the fall of the Hasina government amid a mass uprising.
