Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said that the national election may be held by the end of this year.
He made the remark on Wednesday in an exclusive interview with the Japanese media outlet NHK.
At this time, the Chief Adviser spoke about his plan for rebuilding Bangladesh.
When asked about the upcoming election, Professor Yunus said that the maximum possible timeframe for holding the vote is by the end of this year.
He said that once the election is held, the newly elected government will have a strong and stable foundation to operate.
The Chief Adviser also expressed hope that the country’s youth will play a key role in shaping the future.
In August last year, a student-led movement led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government after 15 years in power. Following her removal, she took refuge in India.
Afterward, an interim government was formed, with Professor Yunus as its head. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has vowed to restore stability in Bangladesh and strengthen the country.
Reflecting on the situation, he said that Bangladesh has come a long way from where it was. “We inherited a completely broken society, economy, political system, and judiciary,” he said.
Speaking about the youth, he said that they want to express their creativity and share it with the world. “This is our goal, and we want to see how we can move forward,” he added.
Professor Yunus also expressed gratitude to Japan, Bangladesh’s biggest development partner, for its technology and investment, which he said has created employment opportunities for the country’s youth.
