Five dismissed over corruption in Pirojpur

Five officials, including three engineers of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), have been dismissed from their jobs in Pirojpur over corruption allegations.

The dismissal order of District Accounts Officer AKM Mozammel Haque Khan, former engineers of Sadar, Nazirpur, and Bhandaria upazilas—Mohammad Morshed Sarkar, Mohammad Zakir Hossain Mia, and Mohammad Badrul Alam—and surveyor of Nesarabad upazila office Mohammad Ripon Howlader were issued on Monday (Feb 10).

According to report, in the past five years, former Pirojpur-2 MP Mohiuddin Maharaj and his brother, Bhandaria Upazila Chairman Mirajul Islam Miraj, allegedly embezzled Tk 1,600 crore with the help of these officials.

Earlier, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Pirojpur’s LGED Executive Engineer Mohammad Sattar, imposing a travel ban on him. Locals also held protests and human chains against Zakir Hossain Mia for alleged irregularities.

The case alleged that under Zakir Hossain Mia’s supervision, projects such as Nazirpur-Boithakata and Nazirpur-Char Raghunathpur roads were left incomplete despite full payments being withdrawn. Similar irregularities reportedly occurred across different areas with the support of local engineers.

When contacted, Zakir Hossain Mia denied any involvement in corruption. Attempts to reach the others failed as their mobile phones were switched off.
