Fishermen allowed to fish in Naf River after 8 years

After nearly eight years, fishermen in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar, have been granted permission to fish in the Naf River.

The High Court lifted a ban on fishing in the river following a petition, allowing the fishermen to continue their work until further notice.

However, there are five conditions that must be adhered to in order to maintain this permission. The authorities will review the border situation between Bangladesh and Myanmar over the next three months and decide whether to renew or suspend the fishing permit.

This decision has brought great joy to the fishing community in Teknaf.

The matter was confirmed through a letter signed by Mohammad Kamrul Islam, Assistant Commissioner at the Cox's Bazar District Commissioner’s office, which was sent to the Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer on February 13.

The letter, based on a High Court ruling, directs the Cox's Bazar District Commissioner to take necessary actions for implementing the permit.

The petition filed by the fishermen was properly addressed in August 2024, and the fishing permission is granted subject to the following conditions.

The conditions include that fishing in the Naf River is allowed from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, within Bangladesh’s territory, from Shahpari Island to Teknaf jetty.
