CA, Musk discuss Starlink’s role in Bangladesh

Bangladesh's Chief Advisor (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus and Elon Musk, American entrepreneur on Thursday held an extensive video discussion.

While talking both discussed to explore potential collaborations and advance the rollout of Starlink satellite internet in Bangladesh.

The virtual meeting also included Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative for the Rohingya Crisis and Priority Issues, and Lamiya Morshed, Principal Coordinator for the SDGs from Bangladesh, as well as Lauren Dreyer, Vice President, and Richard Griffiths, Global Engagement Adviser from SpaceX.

During the conversation, both Prof. Yunus and Elon Musk emphasized the transformative impact of Starlink’s satellite internet service, especially for Bangladesh's youth, rural women, and marginalized communities. They discussed how affordable, high-speed internet could help bridge the digital divide in the country, enhancing access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities in remote and underserved areas.

Prof. Yunus emphasized that integrating Starlink’s technology into Bangladesh’s infrastructure would unlock new opportunities for millions of people and help bring the country closer to the global digital economy. He also expressed his excitement about working with Musk to leverage technology for social and economic progress, not just in Bangladesh, but worldwide.

The Chief Adviser pointed out that Starlink could complement the efforts of Grameen Bank and Grameenphone in connecting rural women and young people to the broader world.

He said, “They will become global citizens and entrepreneurs, benefiting from the digital world.”

Elon Musk, in response, praised the pioneering microfinance model of Grameen Bank, acknowledging its significant role in poverty alleviation worldwide. Musk, who has long been familiar with both Grameen Bank and Grameenphone, believes that technologies like Starlink can further drive economic empowerment, innovation, and financial inclusion in Bangladesh.

Prof. Yunus invited Musk to visit Bangladesh for the possible launch of Starlink services, recognizing the importance of this project for the country’s development. Musk responded affirmatively, saying, "I look forward to it."

This meeting marks a key step in advancing the delivery of advanced satellite connectivity to Bangladesh, which could catalyze economic growth, digital inclusion, and innovation across the nation. Both parties have committed to expediting progress on the initiative, with Dr. Rahman, Ms. Dreyer, and Mr. Griffiths set to coordinate further efforts.
