Police verification no longer required for passports: CA

Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus today (Feb 16) directed all district administrators to inform the public that police verification is no longer necessary for obtaining passports.

He said that the required legal framework has already been approved, but due to a lack of awareness, many people continue to face unnecessary difficulties.

Speaking at the inauguration of the district administrators’ council at Osmani Smrity Auditorium in the capital, Prof. Yunus emphasized the need to eliminate this unnecessary provision.

Despite corrective measures, bureaucratic hurdles continue to cause undue suffering, he added.

He said that instead of harassing citizens, government institutions must focus on serving them.

"Obtaining a passport is a fundamental right, just like any other constitutional right. Since police verification is not required for birth certificates or national ID cards, it should also not be necessary for passports. If law enforcement needs to check a person’s criminal background, it should follow standard procedures for identifying offenders, he added.
