Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked third on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 187 at 9am on Tuesday (Feb 25).

The air was classified as 'unhealthy', posing a health risk to residents. An AQI score between 151 and 200 falls into this category, indicating adverse effects for the general population.

India’s Delhi topped the list with an AQI of 222, followed by China’s Wuhan at 194. Pakistan’s Lahore ranked fourth, matching Dhaka’s score of 187.

The AQI in Bangladesh measures five key pollutants: PM10, PM2.5, NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone. Dhaka’s air quality typically worsens in winter and improves during the monsoon season.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution claims an estimated seven million lives globally each year, contributing to heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, and respiratory infections.
