UN presents fact-finding report on Bangladesh in Geneva

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk presented a UN fact-finding report on human rights violations linked to the protests in Bangladesh during July and August 2024. The report was shared in Geneva on Wednesday.

The session was streamed live on YouTube (https://youtube.com/live/szaCueW3WLs) at 6 pm Dhaka time, as noted on the UN's official website.

The findings and recommendations were discussed with member states and civil society to promote accountability, justice, and human rights reforms in Bangladesh. Representatives from Bangladesh’s interim government and civil society took part in the discussion.

On Monday, Volker Turk expressed hope that the independent fact-finding report would contribute to truth-telling, accountability, reparations, healing, and reform in Bangladesh.

He emphasized the importance of ensuring due process in criminal cases and investigating acts of revenge violence, including those targeting minorities, while delivering a global update at the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Turk remarked that Bangladesh witnessed intense violence last year as the then-government forcefully suppressed a student movement advocating for human rights. He noted that the country is now shaping a new future and described the independent fact-finding report as a significant step in this process.
