A Dhaka court has sentenced a man to death for raping and killing a teenage girl in Dohar, Dhaka, seven years ago.
Judge Munshi Md Moshier Rahman of Dhaka's Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict on Tuesday (March 18).
The convict, Ziaur Rahman, has also been fined Tk 2 lakh.
The court ordered that his movable and immovable properties be sold to pay the compensation to the victim's family.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Ershad Alam George said that Ziaur Rahman, son of Sheikh Sona Mia from Banaghata village under Dohar police station, is currently on the run. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
According to the case statement, on October 21, 2018, around 9 am, the victim went to collect vegetables from a field near her house. At around 9:45 am, Ziaur Rahman forcibly took her to a nearby jute field, raped her, and then killed her by slitting her throat with a sharp weapon. He left the body at the scene and fled.
The victim’s father later filed a case with Dohar police station. After an investigation, Sub-Inspector (SI) Syed Mehedi Hasan submitted the charge sheet to the court on March 12, 2019. During the trial, the court recorded statements from 18 witnesses.
