Dhaka’s air quality ‘very unhealthy’ today

Dhaka's air quality remains among the worst in the world, ranking third out of 124 cities for pollution levels on Wednesday, according to real-time data from IQAir.

The capital recorded an air quality index of 202 at 11:00 AM local time, falling into the ‘very unhealthy’ category.

Delhi recorded the highest pollution level globally, followed by Lahore.

The Swiss-based organization IQAir monitors global air quality and provides real-time assessments of pollution levels.

According to its index, Dhaka’s pollution level poses significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions.

The primary contributor to Dhaka’s air pollution is the high concentration of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, which is considered particularly harmful to human health.

At 11:00 am, the PM2.5 concentration in Dhaka’s air was over 25 times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended safe limit.

Air pollution remains a critical public health issue in Bangladesh, worsened by industrial emissions, construction activities, and vehicle exhaust. Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such conditions can lead to severe respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
