Two journalists were attacked, and one of their motorcycles was set on fire allegedly by Chhatra Dal activists in front of the main gate of the Barishal District and Sessions Judge Court on Thursday (March 27).
The injured journalists, Nurul Amin Rasel of Dainik Barishal Protidin and Dainik Mukhapatra and Moniruzzaman, were admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
According to Rasel, a group led by Barishal District Chhatra Dal Organizing Secretary Sohel Rari tried to abduct Abbas Hawlader, a murder case accused who was granted bail. As the journalists filmed the incident, they were attacked. Their cameras were damaged, and Rasel’s motorcycle was vandalized and set on fire.
Barishal Photojournalists’ Association General Secretary Alamin Sagar said video footage identified several attackers, including Chhatra Dal leaders Sohel Rari, Md Almas, Masud Hawlader Masum, Imran Hossain, Rajib Ahmed, Amjad Hossain, Naim, Shawon, Zahid, and Jewel. Journalists have placed five demands, including their arrest.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Muhammad Imdad Hossain confirmed that video footage of the attack was obtained and action would be taken against those involved.
He also said an inquiry is underway into why police officers at the scene remained inactive.
