July girls honoured with IWOC Award

The 2025 International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award has been conferred upon the July girls (Women Student Protest Leaders of Bangladesh) in recognition of their pivotal role in last year's student-led mass uprising.

The US Department of State announced this on March 28.

According to the department, the Madeleine Albright Honorary Group Award will be presented to this courageous group of women who played a leading role in the July-August 2024 protests against violent repression in Bangladesh.

“These women displayed extraordinary bravery, often positioning themselves between security forces and male protesters despite facing threats and violence.

“When their male counterparts were detained, they found innovative ways to sustain communication and lead the movement, overcoming censorship and even an internet blackout. Their resilience and selflessness in the face of adversity truly embody courage,” the statement read.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and First Lady Melania Trump will host the IWOC Award ceremony at the Department of State on April 1 at 1 PM EDT.

Now in its 19th year, the IWOC Award honours women worldwide who have demonstrated remarkable courage, strength, and leadership—often at great personal risk and sacrifice.

Since its inception in 2007, the Department of State has recognized over 200 women from more than 90 countries with this prestigious award.

Nominees are selected by US diplomatic missions abroad, with finalists chosen and approved by senior officials at the State Department.

Following the award ceremony, the honourees will take part in the International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP) and additional engagements in Los Angeles.
