DHAKA: The High Court on Tuesday fixed March 13 for the verdict in a case against The Daily Prothom Alo and The Daily Bhorer Kagoj editor, publisher and correspondents after appeal hearing ended.
An HC bench of Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana fixed the date.
Earlier, a case was filed against the editor and others of the two Bnagla daily newspapers as a report published in 2004 against a High Court Justice Faysal Mahmud Fayezi.
According to the report there was an allegation that the Justice Faysal’s LLB mark sheet was rubbed.
The appeal hearing was started on February 19 this year and ended Tuesday.
Dr Kamal Hossain took part in the hearing on behalf of defendants. On the other hand, Barrister Ajmalul Hossain joined in the hearing for prosecution.
However, a verdict was given by HC for contempt of court for publishing columns in 2005 where Prothom Alo editor Matiur Rahman, Publisher Mahfuz Anam and Correspondents Ekramul Haque Bulbul and Masud Milad were fined Tk 1,000 each for contempt of court.
Moreover, the editor of that period of another Bengali newspaper Daily Bhorer Kagoj Abed Khan and Publisher Saber Hossain Chowdhury was ordered to compensate the same amount and another correspondent of the daily Samresh Baidda was ordered for a two-month jail and Tk 1,000 as penalty of contempt of court case.
In a response of the verdict they appealed in the appellate division of the apex court in 2007.
A Supreme Judicial Council was formed on that time in this regard while Justice Fayezi resigned from his workplace in the same year.
