The chief of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has said legal action will be taken against those responsible for the recent fire at the motif of the 'face of fascism' at the Institute of Fine Arts in Dhaka University.
RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman told reporters on Sunday (April 13) that an investigation is underway to determine whether there were any lapses in security that may have contributed to the incident.
“If any negligence is found, action will definitely be taken against those responsible,” he said at a press briefing held at Ramna Batamul, organised to outline security measures ahead of Pahela Boishakh celebrations.
Responding to questions about the incident, Shahidur Rahman said authorities are looking into the cause of the fire and assessing the role of security personnel on duty at the time.
Turning to the Bengali New Year celebrations, the RAB chief said extensive measures had been taken to ensure public safety across the country, including Dhaka.
“Like every year, this year too, we will celebrate the New Year with joy and enthusiasm,” he said.
Security measures include motorcycle and car patrols, checkposts, observation towers, and surveillance by intelligence teams. Coordination with other law enforcement agencies has also been ensured, he added.
The festivities began on Sunday with a band performance at Suhrawardy Udyan. Events will take place in various parts of the capital from Monday morning, with the main programme at Ramna Batamul followed by a traditional Ananda Shobhajatra procession from the Faculty of Fine Arts.
Day-long celebrations are also scheduled at Rabindra Sarobar.
The RAB DG said cyber monitoring is in place to counter the spread of misinformation and that RAB will remain alert to prevent harassment or eve-teasing during the celebrations.
He urged public cooperation to ensure a safe and peaceful event.
“We have successfully managed security during past events including Victory Day, Christmas, New Year, International Mother Language Day, Independence Day, Ramadan, and Eid. We hope to maintain the same standard for Pahela Boishakh.”
On security at Ramna Batamul, he said there would be plainclothes surveillance, foot patrols, road patrols, and technical support including bomb disposal units and dog squads.
“We have made all the necessary preparations and are optimistic that the celebrations will proceed without any security concerns,” he said.
