The Police Headquarters on Tuesday (April 22) claimed that the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued a red notice against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed, who served under the ousted Awami League government.
The information was confirmed by AIG (Media and Public Relations) Enamul Haque Sagar of the Police Headquarters.
However, as of the filing of this report, Benazir’s name or photo could not be found on Interpol’s official website under its red notice or most wanted section, according to a check by Banglanews.
Earlier, on April 19, it was revealed that Bangladesh’s National Central Bureau (NCB) of police had submitted applications to Interpol in three phases seeking red notices against 12 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the July-August genocide case. The applications were made against those who are currently abroad.
According to police sources, Interpol is now reviewing red notice requests against the remaining 11, including Hasina and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
During the Awami League’s time in office, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) began investigating Benazir for alleged corruption and misconduct. He left the country on May 4 last year while the investigation was ongoing.
Benazir served as IGP from April 2020 to September 2022, and before that, as Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from January 2015 to April 2020. Allegations of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances were raised against him during his time in both positions.
