JU infighting: Probe-body starts investigation: VC wants probe report within 7 days

DHAKA: The probe-body to investigate Monday’s violent clash between two rival factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League on Jahangirnagar University campus started investigation Wednesday.

Meanwhile, JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Sharif Enamul Kabir asked the committee to submit its report within seven days although the syndicate earlier fixed 45 days for submitting the report.

The varsity authorities Monday formed a five-member probe body, headed by Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Farhad Hossain.

The other members are Syndicate member Prof Badiar Rahman, Provost of Bangabandhu Hall SM Mannan Chowdhury, Proctor Arju Mia and Assistant Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan.

A committee member, on condition of anonymity, told banglanews24.com.bd, “The committee has started taking depositions of the witnesses. The statements of the injured who are undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital will be recorded Wednesday.”

Meanwhile, Ashulia Thana sources said the 16 arrested students are being interrogated a day after the court granted their remand.

Sub inspector of Ashulia police station Aminul Islam told banglanews24.com.bd,”We’re trying to identify the accused monitoring photographs published in the newspapers and video footages screened in different TV channels.”

The JU VC told banglanews24.com.bd that stern action would be taken against those proved responsible.

At least 50 students and Assistant Proctor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan were injured in a factional clash of Bangladesh Chhatra League at the University Monday for supremacy in a male dormitory.

Following the clash, BCL high-ups suspended the activities of its JU unit and expelled its 13 activists from the organization.
