Popular Dhaka film actress Nusrat Faria has been sent to jail in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the recent anti-discrimination movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order on Monday (May 19) morning after a court hearing.
Faria’s bail hearing has been scheduled for May 22.
She was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka at around 9:00 am and held in custody at the court jail during the proceedings.
The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Billal Bhuiyan of Bhatara Police Station, filed an application seeking to keep her in jail.
Her lawyer, meanwhile, submitted a bail petition. After hearing both sides, the court set a date for the bail hearing and ordered that she be sent to jail in the meantime.
The actress was detained on Sunday by immigration police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while en route to Thailand.
She was subsequently taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office for questioning and later shown arrested in a case involving the attempted murder of a student in Dhaka’s Bhatara area during protests organized by the anti-discrimination movement.
According to the case details, Nusrat Faria was accused of financially backing a faction of the ruling Awami League that allegedly opposed the anti-discrimination demonstrations.
