Bangladesh moon sighting meeting tomorrow to announce Eid date

Bangladesh’s National Moon Sighting Committee will convene on tomorrow (May 28) to determine the date of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar, based on the sighting of the Zilhaj moon.

The Islamic Foundation said in a statement on Tuesday that the meeting will take place at 6:30 pm at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque's conference room.

The session will be chaired by Dr AFM Khalid Hossain, Religious Affairs Advisor to the government.

The holy Eid-ul-Azha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, falls on the 10th day of Zilhaj, the 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The date will be officially announced after the moon is sighted.

In anticipation of the festival, the government initially declared a six-day public holiday from June 5 to 10. However, to facilitate a longer break, authorities have extended the holiday to 10 days, conditional on government employees working two compensatory Saturdays—May 17 and 24.

With the inclusion of June 11 and 12 as additional leave days and the subsequent weekend, public servants and many private sector workers are expected to enjoy a continuous 10-day holiday around Eid-ul-Azha.
