Ex-JnU professor Anowara sent to jail over murder attempt

Former Jagannath University (JnU) professor SM Anowara Begum has been sent to jail in a case filed over an attempted murder during a student protest in Dhaka’s Sutrapur area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Thursday (May 29) after rejecting her bail plea.

She was produced before the court by the investigation officer, Sutrapur Police Station Sub-Inspector AKM Hasan Mahmudul Kabir, who sought to keep her in jail. Defence lawyer Obaidul Islam filed for bail, but the court denied it after hearing both sides.

Anowara Begum was arrested on Wednesday evening in front of Jagannath University.

According to the case, on July 19 last year, members of JnU Chhatra Dal held a protest near Star Hotel, opposite the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, as part of the anti-discrimination student movement. The accused allegedly attacked the protesters in a planned way.

During the attack, then JnU Chhatra Dal general secretary Sujon Molla was shot in the eye and later underwent long-term treatment.

On February 25 this year, Sujon Molla filed the case with Sutrapur Police Station, accusing 193 people, including 94 JnU teachers, staff, and Chhatra League activists. Professor Anowara is listed as the 43rd accused in the case.
