Bangladesh on Saturday (May 31) joined the global observance of World No Tobacco Day 2025, with renewed calls to strengthen efforts against tobacco consumption and promote a smoke-free nation.
This year’s national theme focuses on exposing the deceptive tactics of tobacco companies and advancing efforts for a tobacco- and nicotine-free Bangladesh, according to a press release from the National Tobacco Control Cell under the Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health.
Government agencies, non-government organizations, and civil society activists marked the day with awareness campaigns, advocacy events, and public discussions.
Key demands included higher taxes on tobacco products, stricter enforcement of smoke-free zones, and a complete ban on tobacco advertising and promotion.
Bangladesh’s primary legal framework for tobacco control is the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act, 2005.
The law includes provisions to designate smoke-free public spaces, prohibit the sale of tobacco to and by minors, regulate packaging and warning labels, and restrict all forms of direct and indirect advertising.
Despite progress in reducing tobacco use, health experts say stronger enforcement and broader public awareness are essential to curb the harmful effects of smoking and smokeless tobacco, which claim thousands of lives in Bangladesh every year.
World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31 under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) to highlight the health risks of tobacco use and to advocate for effective policies to reduce consumption worldwide.
