Secretariat employees stage protest march

Government officials and employees at the Bangladesh Secretariat staged a protest march on Sunday (June 1), demanding the repeal of the recently issued Public Services (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, which they have denounced as a "black law."

The demonstrators gathered at the Badamtala premises of the Secretariat around 11 am, where they held a brief rally before marching toward the offices of the Food Adviser and Law Adviser to submit a memorandum outlining their demands.

Participants in the protest declared that their movement would continue until the ordinance is withdrawn. “We went to the field, and we will return only after achieving our demands,” they chanted during the rally.

According to organisers, a formal memorandum would be handed over to three government advisors as part of their ongoing campaign against the ordinance, which they argue undermines civil service rights.

The protest comes despite a notice issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on May 26, which banned all rallies, gatherings, and processions in and around the Bangladesh Secretariat, including the official residence of the Chief Adviser in Jamuna.

Secretariat employees have vowed to continue their demonstrations in defiance of the restrictions, warning of further action if their demands are not addressed.
