The proposed national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year has set aside Tk 40,698 crore for the defence sector.
Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed made the announcement during his budget speech on Monday (June 2), revealing details of the allocation. According to the proposal, the Ministry of Defence's Defence Services will receive Tk 38,728 crore, while other services under the ministry are allocated Tk 1,923 crore. The Armed Forces Division has been allocated Tk 47 crore.
In the revised budget for the 2024–25 fiscal year, the total defence allocation stood at Tk 39,239 crore.
Earlier in the day, the interim government’s Advisory Council, led by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, approved the proposed Tk 7,90,000 crore budget. This is Tk 7,000 crore less than the current fiscal year’s budget, marking the first time the national budget size has decreased compared to the previous year.
