31,226 tonnes waste removed in 3-day: DSCC

Authorities of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Monday (June 9) said around 31,226 tonnes of sacrificial animal waste had been cleared over the three days of Eid-ul-Azha.

DSCC Administrator Md Shahjahan Mia came up with this remark this afternoon at a press conference at the WASA Bhaban in the capital.

He said that all the waste from the first day of Eid was removed within 12 hours, and the waste from the following two days had also been cleared by DSCC.

“On the second day of Eid, 32,000 animals were sacrificed, and 16,000 more were slaughtered on the third day. All the waste from these sacrifices was removed in phases,” he said.

This year, a total of 12,853 cleaning workers were involved in the cleanup efforts — including 10,000 from the city corporation and over 2,000 from private organisations.

According to the DSCC administrator, the amount of waste this year was more than last year, when about 22,000 tonnes were removed.

Since Eid day, DSCC received 21 complaints related to waste management.

Shahjahan Mia said that every complaint was addressed immediately after being received.

Regarding visibility of waste, he said, “Although waste was visible in many areas of the south during the morning, the newly generated waste was removed quickly. People won’t see piles of waste lying around in Dhaka South anymore.”

Regular waste collection activities will start again from Tuesday, he added.
