Nizami verdict any day

DHAKA: A Bangladesh tribunal, which has been dealing with the war crimes charges leveled against Jamaat Ameer Matiur Rahman Nizami, may deliver its verdict any day as the trial proceedings concluded Monday.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 kept the judgment on CAV (curia advisari vult, a Latin legal term meaning court awaits verdict).

Two members of the three member-ICT led by new chairman Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order. Justice Jahangir Hossain was absent on the day.

Earlier in the day, prosecutor Mohammad Ali presented his counter arguments and concluding statements.

Advocate Tajul Islam placed his arguments in favour of Nizami before the court on Sunday (March 23).

Later, the tribunal kept the case on CAV.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Nizami, 69, is facing 16 charges of wartime offences which he allegedly committed during Liberation War in 1971.

On May 28, 2012, the tribunal indicted the Jamaat Ameer for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

On June 29, 2010, Nizami was arrested after a magistrate court in Dhaka issued arrest warrant in connection with a criminal case over hurting religious sentiment of Muslims.

Later on July 22, the tribunal shown him arrested in the war crimes case.
