DHAKA: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is set to issue directives saying “no police personnel can smoke in uniform.”
DMP Commissioner Benazir Ahmed made the disclosure in a conference on Police support to control tobacco and drugs, arranged by Coalition Against Tobacco (CAT) at the conference room of DMP headquarters on Thursday noon.
He also said, “In addition to their routine duty, DMP personnel work to raise awareness among people. We have to raise awareness against smoking and drugs. There is no ghetto in the city for the phensedyl addicts”.
He also said, “If DMP would have employed its power to thwart criminals, the power it employed to give safety to the citizens, people would get more peaceful environment. Controlling tobacco is a social duty”.
He also thanked citizens of Dhaka for their ever stretched helping hand and said that DMP is going to issue directives that no police on duty can smoke.
CAT president Ali Liakat said we hope the tobacco controlling act will be passed shortly.
On behalf of Dhaka Journalist Union (DUJ), its president M Altaf Mahmud, commissioner Abdul Jalil Mandal, Mili Biswas, Sheikh Maruf Hasan and Ibrahim Fatemi and on behalf of CAT, former lawmaker Ashraf Uddin Khan Imu, Sirajum Munir and Kamruzzaman Zia, among others, addressed the conference.
