AL gets Hizla, BNP Muktagachha

DHAKA: The ruling Awami League-backed aspirant won in Hizla upazila of Barisal while BNP-backed candidate won in Muktagachha upazila of Mymensingh district in re-voting in the fourth phase of fourth upazila polls on Thursday.

Sultan Mahmud Tipu from AL secured the post of chairman in Hizla upazila of Barisal district while BNP’s Jakaria Harun won in Muktagachha upazila of Mymensingh district.

Sultan Mahmud with Helicopter symbol got 13,875 votes while his nearest opponent got 8,234 votes.

District Senior Returning Officer Dulal Talukder declared the results unofficially in the night.

However, BNP called a daylong hartal for Sunday in the upazila alleging vote manipulation.

On the other hand, in Muktagachha of Mymensingh district, BNP backed candidate Jakaria Harun secured the post of chairman with Pineapple symbol.

He got 80,509 votes where his nearest AL candidate bagged 74,604 votes in all 101 polling centers.

Muktagachha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer Mir Nahid Hasan declared the results unofficially.

On March 23, vote casting was halted due to violence and vote manipulation in some cemtres of the upazilas.
