DHAKA: Dhaka Metropolitan Police marked six mugging-prone areas as danger zones across the city and decided to boost security measures in a bid to curb stanching.
Police sources said list of the areas include Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Ramna, Old Dhaka, Jatrabari and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
A total of 39 mugging cases – 19 in January and 20 in February – were filed with different police stations of the city. Six robbery incidents were reported in January and four in February, said sources concerned.
Most of the incidents took place in Mirpur and Jatrabari areas, the sources added.
Many of the victims even did not file any complain with police station.
Abu Bakar, a resident of Shajadpur area, who was mugged at gunpoint losing TK 5,000 and two mobile phone sets, filed no case even a general dairy too.
“Would I be got back my money and mobiles, if I filed a case? Rather, I fear of being victim of police harassment,” he told banglanews.
Meanwhile, DMP decided to increase police patrolling in the six areas along with the intelligence forces.
DMP joint commissioner Shahabuddin Khan told banglanews “Concerned police stations have been given instructions to prevent mugging in the areas.”
Mugger target dawn
Muggings often take place during dawn. People come out for jogging while police go tired after night duty and then the thugs take opportunities.
Mugging in disguise
Muggers take chances when day laborers come to the city from neighboring districts by bus or truck, they emerged with, commit the crimes and then vanish.
Mugging for drug money
Detective Branch assistant commissioner Tawhidul Islam told banglanews “In fact, stanching has been increased due to spread of drug use, especially Yaba tablets, youths, mostly Yaba tablets users, are involved in mugging to collect necessary money.
Police has got the data recently following interrogation of some suspected detainees, he added.
He claimed stern actions are being taken by the Detective Branch of police to prevent the mugging and snatching in the city.
