GAZIPUR: Four construction workers were killed and five others injured after an under construction bridge collapsed on Kapasia-Raniganj road on Thursday morning.

Of the deceased, three were identified as Abu Bakar Siddique, 42, Fulu Mia, 40, and Azgar Ali, 42, of Anaria of Sherpur district.

The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Locals and witnesses said the district LGED allotted some Tk 5 crore for renovating an old bridge on the Kapasia-Raniganj road near Barun Bazar area to the construction firm Masers Hanif Enterprise.

As usual, some 11 laborers began working at 8:00am Thursday. At one stage, the middle part of the bridge collapsed to 15 feet ground with the four workers, leaving them dead on the spot.

Hearing the other workers’ hew and cry, locals rushed in and recovered the bodies.

Officer-in-Charge Kapasia Thana M Ahsan Ullah confirmed the death news to banglanews.

On information, upazila chairman Khandaker Azizur Rahman Pera, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Allauddin Ali visited.
