DHAKA: Communications Minister Obaidul Quader on Saturday said no unfit vehicle would be allowed to ply on the city thoroughfares from May.
The minister came up with the disclosure when visiting an accident spot in the airport area of the city in the noon.
Quader said, “The duration of withdrawing ramshackle vehicles around the city has been extended from March 26 to April 30 as per demand of the owners and no unfit one would be allowed plying across capital from May.”
Citing “error in system”, he said there is lack of cooperation among city corporations, Bangladesh Road Transport Authorities (BRTA), traffic police, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) and local government. “So, the road mishaps are not being reduced,” he observed.
He said speed breaker would be constructed in the airport area within three days in preventing the road accident. “Road divider will also be extended there and traffic signal post will be set up within two months,” he said.
The minister alleged that no works are being done properly as the city corporations have no mayors, those came to the administration stay in the post six months only, and consequently problems are not solved.
During his visit there, a mobile court of BRTA fined 13 vehicles for not having the proper documents and sent four more to dumping stations and jailed a driver for one month.
