CHITTAGONG: District administration Saturday imposed section 144 in Sitakunda upazila to avoid a possible clash between the rival groups of Awami League and BNP as they called meetings at the same place.

Additional police have been deployed in the upazila to avert any untoward incident as tension mounted among the leaders and activists of both parties.

Police said Jangol Salimpur Chhinnomul unit of BNP called a meeting at Arefin Nagar at about 3pm on Saturday protesting the arrest of its leaders and activists. BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury was to attend the meeting as chief guest.

Local Awami League also called another gathering at the same venue at same time.

Deputy Commissioner Foyez Ahmed slapped the ban in the area at about 8am for 24 hours to maintain law and order.
