DHAKA: Critical health conditions of former BNP secretary-general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, now under treatment of lung cancer at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Square Hospital, improved a little Saturday.

“He has his sense but unable to make any movement,” hospital’s ICU chief Mirza Nazim Uddin told banglanews24.com.bd at 2pm.

“There is no development about Bhuiyan…he is inhaling 99 percent oxygen. But he may improve if the percentage of inhaling oxygen comes down,” said Dr. Nazim.

He needs no extra drugs, as his blood pressure and kidney are normal, the physician added.

Earlier at about 12 noon, Bhuiyan’s personal doctor Dr. Bazlul Gani told journalists that condition of Mannan Bhuiyan improved slightly.

“The physical condition of Mannan Bhuiyan is now a bit better as the temperature of his body has come down to 98 degrees Fahrenheit from 102,” said Gani at the Square Hospital.

“But it doesn’t mean that he is free from danger,” he added.

The senior politician is on life-support system due to his inability to breathe normally. He has been undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital since he returned from Singapore on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, the former local government minister flew to Singapore on May 31 for treatment. He had undergone treatment at Singapore National University Hospital. He was given chemotherapy eight times there, said his family members.

BNP standing committee members Barrister Rafiqul Islam, Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu, president of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal Hasanul Haque Inu MP and MP from Feni Mosharraf Hossain visited Bhuiyan Saturday at the Square Hospital.

Bhuiyan was BNP`s secretary general for 11 years and served as the LGRD and cooperatives minister of the past BNP-led coalition government.

He was expelled from the party in 2007 just before the arrest of party chairperson Khaleda Zia during emergency imposed by the last caretaker government for his reformist role. Mannan Bhuiyan participated as independent candidate in the parliamentary election of 2008, but failed.
