DHAKA: At least 15 students of Dhaka University were injured in a clash with shopkeepers at Nilkhet book market adjacent to the campus in the city on Saturday afternoon.

The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said a spot account of the incident.

The agitated student torched bookstalls and vandalized a few vehicles during the clash.

Sources said the students of the university locked into the clash after some shopkeepers beat up two students of Zahurul Haque Hall following an altercation over price of a book in the afternoon.

Witnesses said, hearing the news of beating, over 100 students of the university rushed in and set fire to several makeshift bookshops on the footpaths and vandalized.

Later, the bookstall owners and workers launched a collective attack on the students, triggering the clash that left 15 students.

The agitating students also vandalised a private car during the clash.

Police fired several rounds of teargas canisters to bring the situation under control around 6:00pm.

On information, acting Proctor pf the university Professor Amzad Ali rushed to the spot.

“The injured students were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital,” he said.
