AIUB teacher gets Fukuoka Excellent Award

DHAKA: American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) teacher Mohammad Nasir Uddin received Excellent Student Award of the IEEE Fukuoka Section for 2013.

He got the award for his presented paper title ‘Demonstration of resonance frequency enhancement effect by using split pumping region in active multi-mode interferometer laser diode’ where Takaaki Kizu, Dr. Yasuhiro Hinokuma, Dr. Akio Tajima, Prof. Dr. Kazutoshi Kato and Prof. Dr. Kiichi Hamamoto are the co-authors of the paper.

Date of Publication of the paper in June / July 2013 and Nasir Uddin was awarded the honour in February 2014, says a press release.

Brief summary of the paper: Laser diode capable of high speed direct modulation is one of the key solution for short distance applications due to their low power consumption, low cost and small size features. Realization of high modulation bandwidth for direct modulated laser maintaining the above mentioned feature is needed to enhance the short distance low cost data transfer.

One promising approach to enhance the modulation speed is to increase the photon density to achieve high modulation bandwidth. So to achieve this target, 1.55-μm InGaAsP/InGaAsP Multiple quantum well (MQW) asymmetric active Multi Mode Interferometer Laser diode (MMI-LD) has been demonstrated.

The split pumping concept has been applied for the active multi-mode interferometer laser diode (active MMI LD) and significant enhancement of electrical-to-optical 3-dB-down frequency bandwidth (f3dB) up to 8 GHz from 2.3 GHz due to the enhancement of resonance frequency has been successfully confirmed. Clear and open eye diagram had been also realized for 2.5 Gbps direct modulation.
