SIDDIRGANJ (NARAYANGANJ): Tense situations prevailing in Siddirganj area of the district since the recovery of six bodies including that of abducted Councilor Nazrul Islam on Wednesday afternoon.
Angry people have kept Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet highways blockaded since Thursday morning.
Nazrul’s supporters set fire to another councilor Nur Hossain’s office, different places on the roads, and Opera Theater there.
Police fired blank shots to bring the situation under control. Amour career personnel (APC) have been patrolling in the area. BGB remain alter to keep situation controlled.
The recovery sparked protest among the family members, relatives and supporters of the councilor. They poured onto the highways, blocked the roads, set fire, and carried out vandalism there from Wednesday evening to midnight.
On Thursday, hundreds of supporters of Nazrul poured onto the roads once again in Siddirganaj area on the morning. They set fire to offices of councilor Nur and Bangladesh Truck Covered Van and Pickup Owners’ Association. On information, fighters rushed in and doused the flame. They also torched an opera theater.
The agitators put tyers, wooden logs and set fires here and there on the roads and kept the rods blocked till 12:30pm
Members of the law enforcing agencies were apparently seen inactive in face of the protest though they fired several round of blank shots. APC are patrolling in the area and BGB are on alert.
Situations remain clam now, though tense situations are still prevailing there, Violence may spread out anytime there.
Siddirganj Thana Officer-In-Charge Abdul Matin told banglanews, “We are working on what we need to do to bring the situation under control; police are facing the situations patiently.”
“Situation remains calm now, though we are on alert, and numbers of police forces have been deployed”, he added.
