US to develop Indian subcontinent

NEW YORK: The United States want to develop Indian subcontinent economically in a positive way through utilizing the fuel and hydro power.

Deputy Assistant Secretary Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Fatema Z. Sumar came up with the disclosure in a sub-committee hearing of Foreign Relation Committee on Wednesday.

Fatema Z. Sumar said that US have taken an initiative in ‘New Silk Road’ project with South and central Asia. 

Referring the statement of U.S. Foreign Affairs Minister John Kerry, Fatema Z. Sumar said that there are four main objectives of the project.

They are--- firstly, to create a regional energy market, secondly, developing regional business and transportation, thirdly, reform of customs and border management and at last but not at least introduce and involve the regional people with new business fields.

The US along with international financial organizations, agencies is jointly implementing the program. The project will be helpful to get regional preferences as ‘Istanbul Project’, Fatema Sumar further added.

According to the hearing she further said that the central Asia is resourceful with oil, gas and hydro power. On the other hand, the demand of South Asian people of fuel and energy is increasing day by day. The resource of central Asia can meet the demand of South Asian people, she added.

She also mentioned the US aid on multipurpose projects of CASA-1000, TUTAP and TAPI. Around 1300-Megawatt electricity is likely to be shifted to Afghanistan and Pakistan from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan under CASA-1000 program with the help of World Bank. In the same way the other two projects can be beneficiary to South Asian countries.

Moreover, US is assisting to set up natural gas pipeline of Turkemenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

The experts said that the TAPI program will be a game changer to Indian subcontinent.

Moreover, US is emphasizing on easy going customs and flexible border services for the sake of regional business opportunities. US is promised to prevent the illegal and dangerous goods. On the other hand the country is working to avail an open and safe border management.

The business is expanded already. The inter-regional business has increased to 49 percent in last five years. The expenditure of transportation and business has reduced to 15 percent in border areas in last three years.

Overall, she said that the regional collaboration depends on the involvement of people in business. The US government is providing educational aid in south Asian countries. The female symposium has increased due to these financial aids and other facilities in the subcontinent, she added.

Finally, Fatema Z. Sumar said that the “New Silk Road” project is made to establish south and central Asia as a strong and stable competitor in the world economy.
